Description

Spirit-possession rituals at indigenous religious shrines in southern Ghana have probably existed long before European travelers to region during the early-and mid-nineteenth century made references to them in their travel accounts (Beecham, 1841; Bowdich, 1819; Cruikshank, 1853). While spirit-possession and other indigenous religious rituals have typically been regarded as "traditional" cultural practices, shrine practices in southern Ghana have always been situated within broader process of social change, and have also functioned as forms of resistance, practices of authenticity, and a means of performing cultural identity.
